OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- United Services Organization (USO) and Sesame Street put on a show for families at the gym and fitness center on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI), May 24.

The 3rd annual show addresses military children and the challenges they face.

“This is a special show in a lot of ways,” said Nicole McClendon, USO Entertainment Tour Producer. “It’s for our military kids, about our military kids and we get to bring it to the military kids.”

The event aims at being an easy opportunity for a night out and spending time with family.

“It gives the families a great place to relax and enjoy things,” said Genia Wessels, Installation Child and Youth Program Director, NASWI. “It’s a chance to do something as a family and that’s important for us.”

The plot of the show examines the challenges of moving and meeting new people when transferring commands.

“It addresses the hardships we have to go through and how to cope,” said Lt. Jeremiah Brinkman, Naval Hospital Oak Harbor, who attended the show with his two children.

USO and Sesame Street started touring in 2008 to bring unique military-themed shows directly to military families.

“Instead of a family having to make the long trek into Seattle to see a show we bring it right to them here on base,” said McClendon. “They go through so much and this is really a big thank you from us to them.”

The USO looks to help in any way they can with support to military members and their families throughout their careers.

“We want them to know that we’re here for them, we’re always by their side and we want to do whatever we can to try and make the stuff they’re going through a little bit better,” said McClendon.
