RALEIGH, N.C. – More than 400 runners and walkers participated in the 4th Annual Minuteman Muster 5k and 8k race put on by the North Carolina National Guard Association in Raleigh, May 21, 2016, celebrating Armed Forces Day and raising money for charity.
The event also acts as a way for locals to interact with the NCNG and learn more about the Soldiers and Airmen who work within their community.
“When there is a flood or natural disaster, the Guard goes out into the communities.” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Carline Bloss, with NCNG’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion and this year’s race coordinator. “This event gives exposure to everybody to see what the National Guard is about.”
The proceeds from the event support the North Carolina National Guard Association, the North Carolina National Guard Museum and Operation Enduring Warrior, who in addition to units within the Guard and vendors, set up booths where participants and spectators could learn about the National Guard and organizations the race supported.
SFC Anthony Busko, a telecommunications operations supervisor stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C. and a volunteer with Operation Enduring Warrior, said it was awesome to be at the event.
“The camaraderie is paramount,” Busko said. “You can feel it as soon as you come up, everyone is willing to help, everyone is willing to lend a hand, and the fact that organizations like the National Guard are reaching out to us to help us raise awareness and raise funds and it puts that brotherhood level up front so everyone can see it.”
The race also acts as a way to support the NCNG’s motto of being an Always Ready, Ready Team putting an emphasis on fitness.
We talk about being a warrior, no matter what your job is in the Guard, you have to be physically fit,” said Lt. Col. Bill Gray, the battalion commander for 1st Battalion, 252nd Armor Regiment, who ran as part of a team with other Soldiers from his unit. “This is a great event that supports that in a fun way”
Awards were given to overall and age group winners for the 5k and 8k, as well as team awards for NCNG units, group runners and local high schools.
Bloss, said plans are already being made for next year’s Minuteman Muster.
“I can’t wait for next year, it will be bigger and better,” she said.
