Eight teams competed in six events ranging from a 100-question multiple choice exam to a simulated engines-running cargo load and off load exercise during the second annual 76th Aerial Port Squadron (APS) Rodeo. The competition was held here during the three day Unit Training Assembly for May, 2016.

Senior Master Sgt. Victor Rivera is the chief of operations with 76APS.

“The point of the exercise is to fine tune and hone our aerial port skills,” said Rivera. “We have a wide range of different tasks that we are responsible for.”

Activities also included in the event are the 25k and 10k Aircraft Loader driver’s course and pallet build-up competition. A forklift competition requires the participant to navigate a series of turns around cones with a pitcher of water balanced on a wooden frame, sitting on the vehicle’s lift forks. If the water spills, the contestant is disqualified.

“We are given a scenario involving cargo of varying weight limits, an aircraft and a pallet position to build for,” said Tech. Sgt. Brooke Sica an air transportation craftsman with 76APS. “We must know weight restrictions, pallet height limitations and how to properly build up and net a pallet for air worthy transportation.”

Sica said that properly building is more important than the time limitations on the competition. Sica competed in last year’s rodeo and had hopes to win first place during the second edition of the event.

Eight team chiefs were selected from a pool of all APS technical sergeants. The team chiefs then used a draft system to select their teams. The selection process ensures that the teams are different from year to year giving team members an equal chance to show their individual skills during the competition.
