VICTORIA, Australia— Week two of the Australian Army Skill at Arms Meeting concluded May 14, 2016 at Puckapunyal Military Area in Victoria, Australia.

The week of competition started with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor Match pitting Marines with the Marine Corps Shooting Team against 20 other teams in long distance marksmanship.

“The EGA Match is actually an aggregate of two individual matches both at 450 meters,” said Capt. Jared Dalton, the team captain of the MCST. “In 2012, the [MCST] brought over a trophy of two M14s with a giant Eagle, Globe and Anchor and donated it to AASAM specifically for the long-range match in the spirit of competition with the history of Marines known for being distance shooters.”

During the course of the week, shooters competed in a variety of matches, including barricade matches and obstacle course matches, using M16A4 service rifles, M9 service pistols and M240B machine guns. Rain and wind during some of the matches added another level of difficulty and challenge to the competition.

“On these ranges here the wind is the biggest issue,” said Warrant Officer Class One Ian Beattie, the team captain of the Australian Army Shooting Team. “The learning part is to be able to read the wind and to see the consistency of how the wind works.

“If they can’t read the wind and conditions on specific situations then it becomes hard to employ that in combat operations.”

Sgt. Martin Lucero and Sgt. Connor Brady placed third for Match 203, a panoramic sniper match.

At the end of the week’s events, the winning team and individual shooters were presented with their awards at a parade field where Lt. Gen. Angus Campbell, the Chief of Army for the Australian Army, congratulated the competitors. During the ceremony, the International Champion Shot award was given to to 2nd Lt. Appolta Siahaan, a competitor with the Indonesian Army.

“What I have seen today is truly inspiring in terms of the quality and challenge of the shooting and the friendly, competitive and professional rivalries that have developed to see who is the individual and team champions,” said Campbell. “I wish you all well in your soldiering and hope that well work together as teams in the future.”
