ZIMNITSA, Bulgaria (May 17, 2016) – Local Bulgarians from the Municipality of Straldzha and U.S. Marines planted 1200 shrubs for the community by the railhead near Novo Selo Training Area.
“The mission today is all about helping the people from the village of Zimnitsa,” said Sgt. Nicholas S. Buja, a Civil Affairs team chief, with Black Sea Rotational Force. “They allowed us to transport our tactical vehicles with their rail station so we can accomplish our exercises with no issues.”
As a sign of maintaining friendship and continuing the partnership between Bulgarians and U.S. Marines, a plaque now stands among the newly-planted greenery.
“We are continuing a tradition that dates back to 2009 when a Kindergarten was renovated,” said Bozhidar Nihorliev, the Deputy Mayor of the Straldja Municipality. “We are laying the foundations for a project that involves both Americans and Bulgarians taking care of nature together.”
Community relations projects show that U.S. Marines not only work well with Bulgarian partner troops, but also with local townspeople to accomplish various missions.
“This means good events can happen in the future,” said Nihorliev. “It doesn’t matter whether it is started by [U.S.] Marines or Bulgarians. We are showing that when we are together and think in the same direction, things will happen.”
