The 62d Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) conducted an emergency response exercise with more than 30 local, state and federal organizations during an exercise at the Pueblo Chemical Depot in Colorado on May 4.
This annual exercise tests and grades emergency response capabilities of the Pueblo Chemical Depot along with the participating local, state and federal organizations.
During the training, the 62d Ordnance Company (EOD) ensured that there were no explosive hazards that could disrupt the clean-up and decontamination following the chemical weapons explosion and spill. The 62d OD CO (EOD) also assisted the Pueblo Fire Department on personnel decontamination.
“We have conducted classes on Hazardous Waste, emergency response, quarterly Chemical Accident/Incident Response and Assistance (CAIRA) and Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP) exercises with the PCD, said CPT Nicholas Clegg, 62d Ordnance Company (EOD). "We continue to expand our relationship with PCD because in a CBRNE event no one can handle the problem alone.”
The exercise highlighted some challenges the 62d will continue to work on to improve their ability to assist the PCD in an emergency.
“The biggest challenge of working with these agencies from an EOD perspective is navigating the different governmental regulations governing how one conducts themselves,” said Clegg. “It is important for all the agencies to understand the regulations and procedures of each other’s organizations before an incident occurs.”
Clegg added in an exercise or real world emergency that requires EOD support we have to be cognizant of the fact that we are only one part of the team. And as an EOD team, we always have to see the big picture in our thought process.
The 62D Ordnance Company (EOD) deploys and conducts EOD Operations in support of military and civilian authorities to defeat or mitigate conventional and unconventional (nuclear, biological, chemical, and improvised explosive devices) in the assigned area of responsibility.
