Task Force Red Wolf wrapped up their second medical readiness training exercise today May 19, 2016, during Exercise BEYOND THE HORIZON 2016 GUATEMALA.

The exercise, which took place over 10 days, served 5,085 patients and on average each patient was seen by three different specialties, which translates to 17,572 encounters.

MEDRETE B changed the lives of several Guatemalans and will be missed.

“I’m happy and sad at the same time that the MEDRETE is over,” said Cesia Aymed Rodas Ramirez. “It brought medicine, treatments and hope to the community however; there is still so many more that need to be seen. I would like to see another soon.”

Moreover, the MEDRETE didn’t only change the lives of the patients but the medical personnel also changed.

“Some of the people you talk to are happy to see this exercise over,” said Canadian Lieutenant Navy Andrea Feist, Canadian Forces Health Services Group Headquarters nurse. When it’s hot and humid, the days do seem long and hard but, I believe time is relative and I enjoyed every minute of my time here. This job here, unlike my job back at home, requires me to use my patient assessment skills. One of the main problems we ran across was stomach pain and the first question I always ask is ‘How much water did you have to drink’ and the typical answer was always ‘Maybe a cup’. Being from Canada, we don’t have a problem with finding drinking water. So, hearing a response like this really makes me thankful and gives me a greater respect for the hardships these people go through.”

Likewise this sentiment didn’t reside with the medical personnel.

“After being here for a month and seeing what I’ve seen, I’m not going to complain about the things I have to deal with when I get home,” said U.S. Army Capt. Hector Torrez, 350th Counter Intelligence Group specialist.

However, this isn’t the last MEDRETE the task force will be sponsoring. MEDRETE C will kick off May 23, 2016 with a goal of out doing the previous two exercises.
