PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. — Lonnie Angel, a 58-year-old retired Army master sergeant, visited Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island May 16-18, 2016, to get a closer look at how Marines are made.
In 2004, Angel was diagnosed with a terminal liver condition, and ever since, Angel and his family have stopped at Parris Island on the way to Jacksonville, Fla., where he receives treatment.
“After being in the military for over 23 years, you learn a lot about selflessness,” said Angel. “I wanted to be reminded of how much these young men and women give up to serve their country, and with where I’m at with my health, it’s nice to see something good.”
During Angel’s visit, he learned Marine Corps martial art techniques and marksmanship fundamentals, stood on Parris Island’s yellow footprints and watched rappelling.
“After seeing the recruits train, there is no doubt in my mind as to how the Marine Corps got the title the best of the best in our armed forces,” Angel said.
Drill Instructor Sgt. Justin Smith gave Angel his perspective on transforming recruits into Marines.
“It has been a truly humbling experience to be able to give back to those that have come before me,” said Sgt. Justin Smith, with Recruit Training Regiment.
