U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District

The Fort Worth District, in its commitment to ensure life safety, announced today its plans to repair damages at Navarro Mills Dam resulting from the 2015 floods.

Repairs to the dam, totaling approximately $1.8 million, will be completed by Fort Worth’s sister district in Vicksburg, Miss. The Vicksburg District is a district within the Corps that maintains the equipment and personnel to complete repairs such as those at Navarro Mills.

“Life safety is at the forefront of all we do within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,” said Col. Calvin Hudson II, commander, Fort Worth District. “Our Dam Safety Program seeks to ensure that Corps-managed and operated dams present minimized risks to life, property, and the environment. Dams are designed and built to reduce flood risk, but they cannot eliminate all risk.”

According to Corps officials, there are three main items to be addressed during the repair work on the dam which include slide repairs on the right and left sides of the discharge channel and erosion repair on the backside of the embankment.

“We just completed our planning meeting to lay out all the requirements and plan to begin work in approximately three to four weeks,” said Alton Hurley, Navarro Mills Lake manager. “The work is scheduled to be completed around late fall.”

The slides were identified during increased surveillance and inspections during heavy rain last May, while the erosion damage was identified in October.

“The slides are both approximately 150 by 50 feet resulting from the steep slope along the sides of the discharge channel becoming very saturated,” said Hurley. “We plan to cut the slope back to reduce the grade, then cover the repairs with a type of grass matting. On the backside of the embankment, near the toe of the dam, we will repair damage caused by erosion.”

Navarro Mills experienced two pools of record during last years’ floods. The first pool of record occurred June 30 at 442.64 feet. Then a new pool of record was later set on October 31 at 443.19 feet. Navarro Mills’ previous pool of record was 440.36 feet in May 1968.
