    1st Theater Sustainment Command

FORT KNOX, KY – Soldiers from the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) and Fort Knox, Kentucky garrison leadership participated in a wall-breaking ceremony at their future headquarters building here symbolizing the beginning of an estimated $20 million building renovation project May 9.
The renovation will equip the 130,000-square-foot 1940s-era historic building with 90,000 square feet of office space and 21 state-of-the-art conference rooms.
The 1st TSC is currently stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and is spread out over more than one dozen buildings. The new facility will provide the capability to conduct all day-to-day administrative functions in one building.
The building is memorialized in honor of Medal of Honor recipient 2nd Lt. Thomas W. Fowler.
On May 23, 1944, in the midst of a full-scale armor attack near Carano, Italy, Fowler, an armor officer, came upon two disorganized infantry platoons that were being held up by an enemy minefield. Fowler dismounted his tank and personally cleared a path through the minefield by lifting anti-personnel mines out of the ground with his bare hands. He then took control of the infantry platoons until they reached their objective. During this endeavor, Fowler rendered aid to nine wounded infantrymen. He died in combat 10 days later.
“This building has been here for more than 70 years, and it will outlast most modern structures built today,” said Fort Knox Garrison Commander Col. Steve Aiton.
This is a real honor to have an opportunity like this to work in a building dedicated to a Medal of Honor recipient like 2nd Lt. Fowler, said 1st TSC Deputy Commanding Officer Johnney Matthews.
The 1st TSC will also receive a motor pool and a company operations facility to house its armory and other mission essential equipment.
“We are extremely appreciative of the efforts the Fort Knox Department of Public Works team has made to ensure that our needs were met every step of the way with the design,” said Matthews.
The 1st TSC’s move here was announced as part of Army force restructure decisions announced in July 2015, making Fort Knox only one of three installations to grow as a result.
An advance party of 1st TSC Soldiers are already operating on the installation.
The 1st TSC’s mission is to ensure warfighters have the supplies and transportation capabilities they need to accomplish their missions. As the Army premier global sustainment provider, the 1st TSC supplies food, fuel, water, transportation, ammunition, building materials and repair parts to the warfighter. Additionally, the 1st TSC manages the ports, flights and customs points needed to keep people and equipment moving 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
They also provide adjunct support in the areas of financial management, human resources, humanitarian aid, host-nation engagements, and medical care for troops and civilians within the command footprint.
