MUSCATATUCK URBAN TRAINING CENTER, IN, UNITED STATES

    Story by Sgt. Marco Gutierrez

    350th Public Affairs Detachment

MUSCATATUCK URBAN TRAINING CENTER, Ind. - As squad leaders and platoon leaders gather to hear their mission objectives, which could be anything from key-leader engagements, presence patrols, and route engagements, to cordon searches. The soldiers of the 377th Military Police Battalion, Company, and Detachment out of Cincinnati, Ohio wonder what the plan scenario will throw at them and their soldiers.

One of the unique aspects of the training they are taking part of is the realistic backdrop that MUTC offers. The training grounds can create a realistic feel for any situation that soldiers might face when deployed overseas from a mock US embassy, prison facility, Afghan village, and shanty town just to name a few.

Sgt. Slogan Spachtholz, an MP with the 377th MP Detachment, mentioned that having the set up here at Muscatatuck is some thing he has enjoyed, having the different villages, towns, and destroyed buildings adds realism to the exercise. Spachtholtz explains how the realistic look of the training helps junior soldiers get a feel for what they might encounter overseas, and soldiers who have been deployed get a sense of realism to the training.

Sgt. Sean Estell agreed by saying, “The training here gives us a real world representation of what we could potentially see while deployed overseas or even in an urban environment.”

The training was also an excellent experience for junior soldiers of 377th explained Estell by saying, “The way the junior enlisted stepped up to fill the role of either my self or other teams leaders and were able to do the role with confidence, didn’t have to asks questions, and with out hesitation.”

Spc. Ernest Moody said, “I have learned so much since being here and my leadership did a great job of planning the exercise.”

The training took the soldiers from the 377th out of the office setting away from the home station explained Estell, “This hands on, high intensity, high movement, high octane type of training is what keeps the soldiers interested. Not just that but it keeps them fresh with all their skill sets, and that’s what you want.” Estell added, “This is the type of training that keeps soldiers combative ready.”

The training ended in a combined exercise with the entire 377th that brought everything the soldiers learned through the last few months. “I enjoyed getting to interact with my soldiers, seeing them in their natural element, getting to see them have a good time, watching people grow, seeing junior enlisted soldiers step-up as leaders and [noncommissioned officers] run entire missions.”

The realism of the training environment at MUTC is unique and it brought a new element to the training 377th Soldiers making them that much more combat ready, said Estell.
