YAVORIV, Ukraine – Soldiers with 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division along with Soldiers with the California National Guard successfully completed the first Basic Leader Course May 14, 2016 at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center.

BLC is the first course of study in the U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer Education System for specialists, corporals, and sergeants. It teaches them to train and develop future leaders who are adaptive, disciplined and ready to lead effectively at the squad and team levels.

NCOs from the 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command NCO Academy taught the course. The instructors were a part of a mobile training team sent in an expeditionary capacity to train U.S. Soldiers currently assigned to Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine.

“I believe this is a great experience in regards to teaching young Soldiers in a foreign country. It's nice to see leadership truly taking the opportunity to care about their Soldiers’ career and showing interest,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Long, Basic Leader Course Small Group Leader.

The three-week course focused on instilling leadership skills needed to lead team-size units, providing the foundation for further training and development and building functional leadership attributes and competency.

The course’s approach to establishing a learning environment is centered on group participation where students can interact and exchange ideas with their peers in order to use collective reasoning to solve problems.

“BLC is the core of their leadership. This course will mentor and mold them in being great leaders,” said Staff Sgt. Brooke Barksdale, Basic Leader Course Small Group Leader.

The culminating event of the 20-day course was a situational training exercise, in order to assess leadership potential and evaluate student’s ability in applying the lessons-learned throughout the course, while leading Soldiers in garrison or tactical environments.
