JACKSON, Miss.— A Soldier’s health is key in being an effective team member. A change effective June 1 will allow commanders Army-wide to better measure the medical readiness of each member of the unit.

At least once a year, Soldiers across the Army have a Periodic Health Assessment, where they have they are checked to see how physically and mentally fit they are. The Medical Readiness Transformation is designed to make Soldiers’ medical status more visible for the commander, said Sgt. Andrew Anderson, the operations non-commissioned officer with the Mississippi Medical Detachment. This is an important element in determining the unit’s readiness to train or deploy.

The MRT will list Soldiers as deployable or non-deployable, helping commanders to better account for the unit readiness, said Anderson.

The transition will also help commanders because the medical profiles that Soldiers receive will describe what they can do. Medical profiles are documents that are given to Soldiers by physicians that explain any ailments that hinder them from performing any particular tasks

“In the past, we only had what you cannot do on the restrictions list, but now we’re going to put what you can do as well,” he said. “It’s more geared to (Physical Readiness Training) and giving that commander more use of his Soldier on profile.”

This transition will affect the entire Army, including the Army Reserves and the Army National Guard.

The commanders of each unit can visit the portal starting next month for all of the medical information of their Soldiers, placing the commanders more in charge of the readiness of the unit.
