Annually on Earth Day – April 22, people across our Nation and around the world reflect on ways to increase awareness of challenges in preserving the environment.

The idea for Earth Day was inspired by Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson in 1970, who proposed a “national teach-in on the environment” to educate and encourage people to take care of the planet.

Taking care of the Earth is a continued mission for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District. Every day the District finds new and innovative ways to increase its emphasis on environmental stewardship and this year was no different.

As part of its ongoing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics initiative, the Fort Worth District teamed up with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History in their All-Systems Earth festival April 20, 2016.

The festival coincides with Earth week April 19-23 allowing students to explore exciting, hands-on activities and learn about Earth's natural systems and cycles.

During the All-Systems Earth Day festival, District team members used a hands-on flood control reservoir model to demonstrate how the Army Corps of Engineers' flood control system works to mitigate the consequences from flooding during major rain events.

“The All-Systems Earth Day event was a great opportunity to encourage our future workforce to aspire to a profession that allows them to be innovative, problem-solvers, and critical thinkers, and make a difference in our communities and Nation,” said Rena Douglas, Fort Worth District emerging leader and Earth Day team lead.

The District recognizes the critical role that STEM education plays in enabling the United States to remain the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace to secure the Nation’s future.

Throughout the year, the District participates in science fairs, technology workshops and other STEM events to attract and bring excitement to STEM education to the youth in the community as part of its continued focus on outreach efforts in increasing awareness and inspiring students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic fields.

“The Fort Worth District is committed to teaming with others to strengthen STEM-related programs that inspire current and future generations to pursue careers in STEM,” said Brian Kamisato, deputy district engineer, Programs and Project Management Division, Fort Worth District. “If we are going to strengthen our economy as a Nation, we must strengthen our STEM education.”
