DOHA, Qatar- On May 6, 2016, six Soldiers from Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar traveled to downtown Doha to participate in an event intended to impact the lives of people in Sri Lanka. The event was called, “Swim for a Cause-Doha” and was hosted by Sharq Village & Spa and Doha Charity – a non- profit organization. The purpose of the swim was to raise money to put a well in a Sri Lankan village so that members of that community could have suitable drinking water. The event encompassed a 500M swim and a 1000M in the Arabian Gulf.

Captain Jared Cuevas, Athletic Director, Area Support Group-Qatar, said “besides being a great opportunity to connect with the Qatar community, we are touching the lives of others on other distant shores. Outreach is extremely important to our mission here, and today is a chance to further strengthen the bond we are making with the people here.”

“Swim for a Cause” brought an assortment of people out from different walks of life. The participants ranged from young to old, and different skill levels in swimming. “ I’ve been swimming for twenty years, and I just recently got back into it competitively since being deployed here, and today was a chance for me to compete and support a great cause at the same time. Being a Soldier isn’t only just supporting the mission but also going out and immersing yourself in the culture and being a liaison for your culture,” said Capt. Jennifer Evans, Commander of B Company, 4th Financial Detachment, ASG-QA.

Parents participated in water conservation and water safety exercises with their children as part of the event.
