U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet’s Heritage Committee held a Holocaust Remembrance ceremony at Fort Meade, Maryland May 5.
The event was held in conjunction with the national Holocaust Days of Remembrance May 1-8.
"Days of Remembrance raises awareness that democratic institutions and values are not simply sustained, but need to be appreciated, nurtured, and protected,” said Legalman 1st Class Victor L. Rolling, one of the event organizers. “It also clearly illustrates the roots and ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping in any society."
The Heritage Committee provided Sailors with a brief presentation and poetry reading of significant, Holocaust-inspired poems.
“The committee hosts culturally diverse events, because we live in a nation that is extremely diverse, and we also serve in an extremely diverse workforce,” said Rolling. “We should recognize that it's this diversity that makes our armed forces so wonderful.”
The U.S. Congress established Days of Remembrance as the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust in 1978.
“It is important to remember and honor these types of events, because lives were lost,” said Rolling. "Those who fail to remember the past are destined to repeat it.”
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy's Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an echelon II command.
U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure.
