Through the Army Marketing Research Group, the Army Reserve sponsored an event portion of the 2016 Atlanta Tough Mudder this weekend at Bouckaert Farms in Fairburn, Ga. The Atlanta Recruiting Command was a key component in getting out the Army Reserve message, through fun and challenging activities.

Maj. Carla Debro, Army Reserve Communications Plans Deputy, Office of the Chief of Army Reserve, explained that this year’s Mudder is one of the Recruiting Command’s major annual events.

“We’ve partnered with Tough Mudder to get our (recruiting) message out there, to brand our self, and it was a great opportunity to tell our story about the Army Reserve,” said Debro. “The AMRG was responsible for all the Army Enterprise branding throughout the event. Through the AMRG, the Army Reserve sponsored the Fitness Challenge and the Berlin Wall. It was our opportunity to showcase our brand, to recruit.”

Army Reserve recruiters from the Atlanta Recruiting Company were excited to be part of the two-day event. Army Reserve Soldiers from the 108th Training Command and 335th Theater Support Command were also happy to be part of the event. The 108th and 335th Soldiers set up and ran the Fitness Challenge and Berlin Wall. They also served as enthusiastic cheerleaders for about 6,000 men, women and children throughout the grueling 11.3-mile course and at the finish line.

For Sgt. 1st Class Jomo Blair, Center Leader for the Jonesboro Army Reserve Recruiting Center, it was a first-time experience. He said that the recruiters were there not only to recruit, but also to participate in the obstacle course.

“The Tough Mudder is something you really have to prepare for,” said Blair. “I think it’s a good idea because it draws people together. We (recruiters) came here to this event to show the community that being a Soldier is not all about war. We’re showing everyone that we do big things in the community, that we are ambassadors for our community.”

Blair’s key message for joining the Reserve is that, “you can give back to our nation and to our community. It offers you the opportunity to excel and earn high quality education.” He emphasized that becoming an Army Reserve Soldier can “help you gain mental, emotional and physical strength. The strength of one person is nothing compared to the power of a team.”

Founded in 2010 by Will Dean and Guy Livingstone, the 10 to 12-mile mud and obstacle course was designed to get people out of their comfort zones by testing their physical and mental strength and stamina. This year’s Atlanta Tough Mudder consisted of 20 obstacles participants had to overcome.

Atlanta Tough Mudder event coordinator Hilary May explained that there are no winners or losers. “There’s no clock,” May said. “No one is timed. Instead, this event is a really unique challenge that focuses on teamwork, camaraderie, and accomplishing something bigger than yourself.”

She said the mission of the event is to create and bring life-changing experiences to people from all walks of life. “Some people participate because they are overcoming physical or personal challenges. A lot of the participants come out to bond with their fellow Mudders,” said May. “I think we aligned really well with the Army because our values are basically the same, with the Army’s focus on commitment, teamwork and being your best self. It was a perfect fit.”
