The Visitor Control Center on the Fort McNair portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall is now operational following a ribbon-cutting ceremony there May 2.

Officials say the purpose of the facility is two-fold: Enhancing security of the military installation in accordance with current access control procedures and expediting the process for vetting authorized visitors onto Fort McNair.

“Previously Fort McNair visitors had to travel across the river to Fort Myer to get registered in the Automated Installation Entry system—now they can register right here,” said William R. Johnson II, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Police chief. “We have a lot of visitors: There’s seminars, conferences, weddings, receptions and a list of other things happening here involving Joint Force Headquarters.”

The functional facility moves the Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) closer toward completing the tasks in support of IMCOM Operations Order 15-031: Implement Access Control Procedures. Visitors to Fort McNair can now be fully vetted at the Fort McNair VCC (Bldg. 65), saving the trip across the Potomac to Fort Myer’s Visitor Control Center.

“Our system helps us to determine the type of person we have coming onto the installation quickly to deter the bad guys,” Johnson added.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house held May 2 showcased the facility’s capabilities. The ceremony was attended by Maj. Gen. Bradley A. Becker, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and the Military District of Washington; Col. Mike Henderson, commander of JBM-HH; and Lt. Col. Macedonio Molina, JBM-HH’s director of emergency services, among other distinguished guests.

“In November 2015, under Department of the Army and Installation Management Command executive and operational orders, Army installations were directed to implement full access control compliance by October 2016,” Henderson told an audience gathered at the event. “This open house and ribbon cutting ceremony is just one of many initiatives we are taking to be in full compliance of our directed mission. The primary mission of the Fort McNair VCC will be to implement installation access control policy and enhance the security of the Fort McNair community…As additional resources come on board, DES is projected to expand operational hours to meet the need of the Fort McNair community.”

The Fort McNair Visitor Control Center is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Fort McNair VCC can be reached at 202-685-7760. Or, call the JBM-HH police duty desk at 703-588-2800 for more information.
