Base Hosts Bootcamp for Honorary Commanders

    TRAVIS AFB, CA, UNITED STATES

60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs

The honorary commander program consists of 57 key civic leaders from counties surrounding Travis. Each assigned to a wing, group or squadron commander at Travis. The purpose of the program is to encourage the exchange of ideas, experiences and friendship between key members of the civilian and the military community.
For the civic leaders to become fully engaged in the Air Force mission, it’s necessary to introduce them to the basics of the overall Air Force. For this reason, the intensive honorary commander boot camp was created so honorary commanders can better understand their military counterparts.
The boot camp consisted of a mission briefing from 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, Col. Joel Jackson, and a questions and answer session with the Travis Golden Bears and Honorary Commander Alumni.
Sandy Person, Solano Economic Development Corporation president and an Honorary Commander Alum, a Travis Golden Bear and Air Mobility Command Honorary Commander, spoke about her time as an advocate for the base and what it means to her to serve Travis.
“This program helps bring awareness to the community of what our military citizens are doing,” she said. “There’s no set way to be a ‘good’ Honorary Commander. Just be engaged with your commander. I get back tenfold what I put in.”
Monte Hoover, Gillespie’s Abbey Carpet and Floor president and general manager and 349th Maintenance Group Honorary Commander, spoke about moving to the area as a young kid and seeing all of the Travis aircraft.
“At the time, I never would have dreamed that I would be here today, at Travis,” he said. “I am honored to be part of this program and giving back to my community. It’s great because I am now able to connect with some of my customers who are retired military because I know so much more about the base and the military.”
Following the question and answer session, the Honorary Commanders received an ethics briefing from a judge advocate and learned about Air Force organization, customs and courtesies and the core values from the ALS instructors before going outside to learn and practice drill movements followed by a Retreat flag ceremony.
“It was very informative,” said Kevin Graham, president and chief executive officer for Paul Graham drilling and the 60th Civil Engineering Squadron Honorary Commander. “I had a great time and look forward to coming out more to the base.”
Following the briefings and drill, the Honorary Commanders headed over to Building P-1 where they were able to get a glimpse of what it is like for Airmen to deploy.
“The tours the base provides are so informative and give great insight into the military,” Person said. “People think that because I’m so engaged I know everything, but I learn something every time I come out to the base. I’m inspired by what the Airmen at Travis do.”
