    Story by Airman Tiffany Clark

    110th Wing

The 110th Civil Engineering Squadron, Battle Creek Air National Guard Base, Mich. attended Innovative Readiness Training at Camp Hinds, Raymond, Maine. The 110 CES was accompanied by Marine Reservists, a services team and a medic from April 24th to May 8th, 2016. Over the course of two weeks, the Airmen received hands on training with heavy machinery and real-world job application.

At IRT, Airmen have an opportunity to train with heavy equipment that is not available at home station, gleaning experience that allows them to excel in wartime situations. "The purpose behind why we are here is to enhance our skills and focus on bare base training," said Master Sgt. Luke Wimby, the 110 CES's first sergeant. "We have to be able to perform the mission during wartime."

The IRT program is an opportunity that provides training and readiness for military personnel while addressing the needs of communities. Through this program, the CE unit has refined their engineering, transportation and construction skills by developing projects for a Boy Scouts of America camp. “Building the new dining facility has given the chance for every specialty within Civil Engineering with the exception of our fire department and emergency response to perform their job, while helping out the camp,” said Wimby. “IRT is a good program because it benefits the community as well as our wartime readiness.”

The results of the Airmen's time at IRT include a slew of other new amenities the camp would otherwise have not obtained.
