Cyclists from the Combat Center and across the Morongo Basin gathered to complete a 50-mile ride through Joshua Tree National Park during the Park-to-Park Bike Ride at Knott’s Sky Park in Twentynine Palms, Calif., April 30, 2016.
The event was hosted as a joint effort between the Combat Center, the City of Twentynine Palms and Joshua Tree National Park Service to celebrate Earth Day as well as the 100-year anniversary of the national park.
“It was a great opportunity for everyone to get together and participate in a weekend activity as well as enjoy the park,” said Lt. Col. Timothy Pochop, director, Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs. “For Earth Day we wanted to get people, both on base and in the community, to be able to participate in a cycling event, which doesn’t burn gas or produce air pollution.”
Following the ride, the cyclists proceeded to a family-friendly festival with entertainment, food and an Earth Day educational fair. Various base entities and local community venders attended the festival.
“Earth Day is very important because we need to be aware of our environment and make sure our planet stays clean,” said Daniel Mintz, mayor of Twentynine Palms. “The event successfully raised awareness of both Earth Day and the national park thanks to the efforts of the Marine base, the city, the park service and how well they worked together.”
