FORT STEWART, Ga. – Spouses across the Army dedicate their time to Soldiers through Family Readiness Groups. Hilary Porter has been the FRG leader of 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, for two years. Within the past year, she spent more than 100 hours of her time volunteering for events.

Hilary, spouse of Staff Sgt. Andrew Porter received the Marne Spirit Award on April 15, 2016, at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

“I have assisted in organizing and executing such events as the Battalion Organizational Day in May, and Trunk or Treat at Halloween,” said Hilary. “I also spent much of my time organizing events for Bravo Company such as our yearly summer cookout, Christmas party, as well as numerous fundraising activities throughout the year,”

Hilary was given the Marne Spirit Award in response to her dedication to the community of Fort Stewart. The Marne Spirit Award is reserved for volunteers who demonstrate sustained superior performance of volunteer duties and outstanding leadership abilities that make significant contributions to their organization or entire installation.

“I received the Marne Spirit Award on April 15th, which was an honor,” said Hilary. “It was great to know that my efforts did not go unnoticed. Also, the parking spot at the commissary was a nice perk!”

Andrew Porter, who is an infantryman with 1-30th Inf., said he is proud of his wife for being awarded Volunteer of the Year for 1-30th Inf.

“She works hard at home, has a full time job, as well as a full time mom to three kids... She works hard and enjoys it,” Andrew said. “She enjoys the sense of comradery when [spouses] come together to help the needs of the Soldiers.”

Hilary says she plans on staying with the FRG and continuing all her volunteer work for the Battalion as long as her husband remains in the Army.

“I believe that a strong Soldier starts at home with a good support system,” Hilary concluded. “If I can provide assistance in any way to other spouses and thereby make their lives easier, I am then also making it a little easier for their Soldiers. I want to make sure my husband [and everyone else's Soldiers are] able to focus on [their] mission.”
