The Terrain Walk was the first of its kind in the Raider Brigade and was designed to train and empower leaders at all levels across the Brigade with the knowledge of how a Forward Support Company can enable the success of any mission.
“It was good to get out there and talk to people about the different ways that we are able to provide support and help them get their mission done” Spc. Abdullahi Hassan, food service specialist, Golf Forward Support Company, 4th Bn. 9th Inf. Reg., 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div.
The Sustainment Terrain Walk consisted of eight individual stations, each manned by Soldiers from the three Golf Forward Support Platoons.
Some of the areas covered during the Terrain Walk were maintenance, distribution, and field feeding operations.
The maintenance stations consisted of maintenance control operations, field maintenance operations, commodity shop operations (Generator, Communications and Electronics, and Armament shops) to include working with the 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div., for higher level maintenance support, and vehicle recovery operations.
The Distribution Platoon stations focused on ammunition management, fuel operations, and how all classes of supply are distributed throughout the battlefield.
The Field Feeding section covered how they support the Raider Brigade through dining facility and field operations.
Information presented by each station included section capabilities, how to request support, differences in garrison and field operations, contact information for each section Office in Charge and Non- Commissioned Officer in charge, and allowed time for a question and answer session where the Soldiers in attendance were able to ask any questions relevant to the station.
"The Sustainment Terrain Walk is a great leader development mechanism. By educating company and battalion level leaders on the capabilities of the FSC, it allows for better synchronization of operations and logistics within the organization," said, Lt. Col. Eric McCoy, commander, 4th BSB, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div.

The Sustainment Terrain walk was well received by everyone in attendance. “The goal of the Terrain walk was to give people a better understanding of how a Forward Support Company operates and how we are able to effectively support both the Manchu Battalion and the Raider Brigade, and I believe we did that,” said, Cpt. David Vogt, commander, Golf Forward Support Company, 4th Bn., 9th Inf. Reg., 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div.
Leaders from across the Brigade have already expressed interest for another Sustainment Terrain Walk in the future.
