Class: meet your new teachers

Students from International English School Breckland, a secondary free school in Brandon, shuffled to their desks expecting to be greeted by their teacher, but received a change of scenery as they gazed upon military uniforms worn by U.S. Air Force Airmen.

Airmen from the 95th Fighter Squadron at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., visited the school to educate students and faculty on the topics of physical fitness, aviation and various aspects of the military.

The Airmen visited a science class to discuss the physics behind flying, stress the importance of physical training during a gym class, then ended with a game of Lacrosse.

“The benefit of discussing the Air Force with younger kids allows them to get exposure to different career paths, learn about aviation, and to hopefully bring up the next generation of aviators,” said 1st Lt. Eric Kordus, 95th FS F-22 Raptor pilot.

The Airmen shared their stories with the students throughout the remainder of the school day in the hopes of encouraging their future career prospects.

“I want to inspire them,” said Staff Sgt. James Martinez, 95th FS non-commissioned officer in charge squadron aviation resource management. “It might make them want to make the decision to serve their country one day.”

With RAF Lakenheath and the school in close proximity to each other, the visit is a good opportunity for the students to better understand military life, as well as display the partnership between America and the U.K.

“We hear the planes flying over all the time, and this brings a whole new dimension to it all,” said Hazel Murrell, IES Breckland science technician.

The interaction with the local community allows the members to not only become more educated about RAF Lakenheath and the U.S. Air Force as a whole, but to gain a better understanding of the intricate mission here in the U.K.
