U.S. Embassy Djibouti staff and families participated in the Joint Senior Enlisted Council Fun Field Day event, April 29, 2016, here at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.
The field day included individual and group activities focused on team building and safety, while strengthening the relationship between Camp Lemonnier and the U.S. Embassy.
“The event is a spring fling to provide fun, food and safety for the families, singles and couples from the embassy here in Djibouti,” said U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Matthew Johnson, community liaison to the embassy.
Johnson explained how the Fun Field Day is an example of U.S. Service members bolstering community ties while providing opportunities for embassy staff and their families to have fun on Camp Lemonnier.
“The embassy makes sure our mission is followed through with the Djiboutian officials,” said U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Teena Porter, Camp Lemonnier Personnel Support Office. “They represent us and make it work.”
Planning and setting up the event required multiple teams working together, coordinating everything from logistical support to emergency readiness by many of the local NCO groups.
During the event, these groups provided embassy partners and families with a show-and-tell for the children, educating them on team building, first aid, and fire safety and prevention. Kids were also able to interact with displays of fire trucks, police cars and military vehicles.
“For the Joint Senior Enlisted Council, it’s a way to coordinate with other NCO-level associations on camp,” Johnson said. “Joint Forces 5, Echo 6, and the Chief Petty Officer Association show that we can put together mass events camp-wide and that we can continue to mentor, coordinate and delegate through those associations to improve morale and make things better on camp.”
Family Fun Day and similar events help to maintain relationships with embassy partners and NCO associations, and demonstrate Camp Lemonnier is able to support tenant units and camp partners.
