CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa, Japan – Marines and sailors raise funds for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society by participating in competitive group sports April 29, 2016 on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan.
The NMCRS is a volunteer-run group created to provide financial assistance, interest-free loans, educational scholarships and other support to sailors and Marines in need.
Sgt. Melanie Seymore, a Tracy, Ca., native and an assistant warehouse chief with III Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, is one of many Marines who has been helped by the NMCRS.
Seymore was given a non-interest loan to help aid her with funeral arrangements when her two-month-old daughter passed in 2011. On April 29, she was out enjoying an afternoon of sports at a NMCRS fund raiser.
“I would definitely recommend any of my Marines to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society if they were going through a traumatic event,” said Seymore. “They offer quick assistance loans with no questions asked, and they can help you right on the spot.”
After aid is granted to a Marine or sailor, the NMCRS stays with them to help them with any financial needs they might have.
“They help Marines develop a solid budget plan to help them get their finances back in order,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Tarik Inge, a Philadelphia native and lead area coordinator for the NMCRS. “It’s really a win-win for our Marines and sailors.”
With overseas travel costs exponentially more expensive for Marines and sailors stationed in Okinawa, donations here make a huge impact when helping service members in need.
"Throughout 2015, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Okinawa provided $477,601 in interest-free assistance to 699 service members and their families," said Michelle Budzien, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Okinawa Director.
The event proved to be a success. Over 300 Marines showed up to the event and played for hours in competitive flag football and soccer games.
“It gives Marines an opportunity to come out and have some fun on a Friday afternoon while raising donations for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society at the same time,” said Inge.
The NMCRS holds events like this frequently. It’s a great way for people to get involved in base fun and contribute to good causes at the same time.
“What’s really important about supporting the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society is that all donations go toward helping the Marines and Sailors to the left or right of us,” said Inge. “No one can ever plan for unforeseen crisis or emergencies so that’s why the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society is always there.”
