Sailors administered various athletic events including soccer, relay races and obstacle courses throughout the entire school day ensuring that over 600 participating students had fun while staying hydrated and safe.
“I helped lead the potato sack race and tug-of-war courses,” said Aviation Structure Mechanic Airman Noah Hedenland. “I know when I was younger I looked up to service members. I’m glad I can be out here today with them. The smiles on their faces make it worth it.”
While volunteers had many reasons to donate their time, some just wanted to go out into the local area and do the same activities they do at home with their own families.
“I have two kids and love playing outside with them,” said Machinery Repairman 3rd Class Aminu Jibrin. “It’s important for kids to stay active at a young age to instill a healthy mindset into adulthood.”
With several schools being in close proximity to Naval Station Mayport, the impact of military life is felt by many of the students.
“We have a huge military population here at our school,” said Rashard Willis, Jacksonville Beach Elementary School’s, assistant principal. “Some of these kids have parents deployed right now. I am grateful to see the men and women who serve our country interact with the kids in such a positive way. The boys and girls really look up to them.”
April was designated as the Month of the Military Child by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1986. The observance was set aside as a time to recognize children of military members for the daily sacrifices they make and obstacles they overcome, such as frequent moves, school changes and separation from their deployed parents.
