Gov. Matt Mead said the state recognizes the challenges presented to children of military families, especially during deployments, and the proclamation shows support for the Department of Defense’s Month of the Military Child observance.

“When you see mom kissing the kids goodbye and when you see dad kissing the kids goodbye, that is a stressful time for that family,” Mead said. “It gives me an appreciation for the service members, but we also have to thank the spouses, and we also have to thank the children.”

Military leaders from across the state, as well as military children, spouses and other guests were present at the signing. Col. Trevor Flint, 90th Maintenance Group commander, represented the Mighty Ninety to support the proclamation.

“I grew up as a military kid myself all over the world, and as a dad of school-aged children, I think it’s incredible the governor would take the time out of his busy schedule to make this proclamation,” Flint said. “I have been stationed in a lot of states, and they have always made us feel welcome, but Wyoming in particular does a lot for military families.”

Army Maj. Gen. Luke Reiner, Wyoming adjutant general, also spoke during the signing event and explained the role of military children in the success of their parents as service members.

“The military’s a team sport,” Reiner said. “It takes dads and moms who are going to deploy, and it takes kids who support their parents. We, as parents, cannot do the job the governor asks us to do or the president asks us to do without your support. That’s what makes this month so special.
