FORT STEWART, Ga. – Soldiers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division hosted a squadron organization and family day at Liberty Independence Troop Park, Hinesville, Georgia, April 21.

“This event is designed to maintain and build morale, welfare and esprit de corps within the unit,” said Capt. Frederick Mitchell, an operations plans officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 6-8 Cav. “It’s a time to get Soldiers and their families together just to get their mind off work and focus on each other.”

Families are important because they influence Soldiers and provide daily motivation which impacts the unit positively. Organization days are a way for the unit to thank its families and remind them they are a part of the team.

“We usually conduct family day at least twice a year,” said 2nd Lt. Tyler Smith, a family readiness liaison officer with HHT, 6-8 Cav. “It builds comaraderie in the squadron, starting from troop level where all Soldiers will be having fun with their families while playing sports, and that helps build the bond in a unit.”

This event included four tournaments: football, basketball, relay race and tug-o-war. The squadron presented a trophy to the troop with most wins.

“It was a good competition between Soldiers and every troop will get their awards for winning,” said Lt. Col. Scott Sentell, squadron commander of 6-8 Cav. “Congratulations Troop C on winning the championship.”

The unit made families feel included throughout the event shown by the adjacent playground where children could play with parents and others between competitions.

"I loved being able to be with other families and interact," said Jamee Savage a military spouse of 6-8 Cav. "It was fun watching them play football, and I also enjoyed basketball because it is my favorite sport. This event made me feel important due to the involvement of family members."

Soldiers also expressed their enthusiasm for the event.

"This event is really exciting," said Sgt. 1st Class Norman Morataya a senior supply specialist for the squadron. "Soldiers are happy to spend this time with their families and friends and that is one of the main purposes of this event, to create a great environment for everyone."

The squadron command team showed their appreciation to the families in their own way. Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Oliver grilled lunch for everyone and Sentell gave a personal speech at the end of the event.

“Thank you for coming out today,” Sentell said. “This event was for everyone to enjoy themselves and especially for family members to spend time with their Soldiers and friends. I just want to thank you all for everything you do for your Soldiers and I also look forward to seeing everyone soon the next time we have an event like this, thank you.”
