EVERETT, Wash. – Sailors and civilian employees on installations throughout Navy Region Northwest participated in Earth Day celebrations, April 22.

The Department of the Navy’s 2016 Earth Day theme is “Creating Resiliency Afloat and Ashore.” Naval Base Kitsap (NBK), Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) and Naval Station Everett (NSE) each held events centered on increasing environmental awareness and bolstering eco-friendly habits.

Naval Station Everett’s celebration kicked off with its annual ‘Dumpster Dive’ contest.

Trash teams, consisting of service members and civilian employees, tore through dumpsters full of unseparated trash. The team who could separate the most trash, find hidden pieces of mock personal identification information, and other hidden object, wins.

“Recycling is very important, but it’s very easy for people to just throw stuff away without really thinking about ‘away’ and what that means. Everything has to go somewhere,” said Lt. Cmdr. Brian Foster, public works officer, Naval Station Everett, and member of this year’s winning Dumpster Dive team, the public works department ‘Dumpster Dudes.’

The Dumpster Dive was a central part of both NASWI and NSE Earth Day celebrations. The goal of the event was to demonstrate to participants what is considered trash and what is considered recyclable.

“I think it’s a great tool to show just how much improvement we can do in our recycling,” said Capt. Geoff Moore, NASWI commanding officer. “What we see here is that even though we emphasize recycling and have tons of recycling containers, there’s always room for improvement.”

Both installations conducted a base-wide clean up effort. NSE gave away small saplings to participants, while NASWI conducted a tree planting ceremony.

“Earth Day is really every day, and I think as citizens of the Northwest and as members of the Navy, we do that every day in our recycling, utility conservation, energy conservation,” said Moore.

Through various energy and environmental programs like the Great Green Fleet initiative, the Navy strives to limit its environmental impact as a form of mission readiness.

“Whether you understand it or not, the environment is very important to the Navy,” said Capt. Mark Lakamp, commanding officer, NSE. “We can’t do our job without an environmentally friendly Navy, and Earth Day is once a year that we get to recognize that.”
