For the eighth straight year, Marine Corps Air Station New River’s Headquarters and Headquarters Support won the Joint Operational Support Airlift Center Squadron of the Year Award.
After demonstrating excellence in the United States Marine Corps Small Aircraft Category, they were presented the award by Brig. Gen. Thomas D. Weidley, commanding general, Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune April. 8.
During 2015, they logged 3,026 flight hours across 651 missions. In the process, theytransported 3,445 passengers and more than eight tons of cargo.
"Ultimately it comes around to stepping up to the needs of the Marine Corps and the DOD personnel that require our assistance," said Cpl. Nathaniel Thomson, crew member with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. "We received this award because we have very dedicated Marines and Marine officers that truly care about our brothers and sisters-in-arms; they really want to step up to the plate and take that challenge."
Only two percent of their planned missions were canceled in 2015, with the next closest coming in at a 4 percent cancellation rate and the 18 percentage points better than the last unit.
"We were competing against six other units in the continental United States," said Lt. Col. Les Chiu, commanding officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron on New River Air Station. "It was a total team effort, where it took everyone being able to contribute in the ways they have that has made us so efficient."
Transportation from this unit is available to service members from any branch with funded orders.
"I’m very thankful to be a part of something bigger than myself, just being able to get out there to meet new individuals and make better connections networking through the Marine Corps," said Thomson. "This is a very prestigious award, I’m glad we received it and hopefully we receive some more."
