NMCB 4 Seabees Tour USS Ronald Reagan

Seabees assigned to U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4 Detachment (Det.) Yokosuka embarked on a tour aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), Apr. 12.

“The inherent nature of a Seabee dictates that life aboard a ship is a foreign matter and one experience we don’t often get to take part in,” said Builder 1st Class Christopher Jones. “We are a small and often unknown part of the Navy and opportunities such as this helps to expose both ‘green’ and ‘blue’ Sailors to the dynamic and unique naval force that we are today.”

The Det. observed how the ship takes fuel on board, how supplies are brought in and delivered to the store rooms, and how the ship looks from the inside when they go “dark,” using only red lights to illuminate the internal passageways.

“It was truly a great experience to see how life on a ship can be and how space is so limited. We were able to go up to the bridge where everything is controlled,” said Builder Constructionman Adam Howe. “It was interesting to find out a junior Sailor from the deck department is tasked to drive the ship under orders from the officer of the deck.”

Being the only Sailors in the Type III Navy working uniform, the Seabees stood out to the Sailors of CVN 76. Their fleet counterparts were able to ask questions about life as a Seabee and the Det. was able to hear about their daily routines, deployments and living aboard the U.S. Navy’s only forward deployed aircraft carrier.

“As a fleet rate, it was great to see the reactions of the Seabees and their shock to ship life. Seabees are a small community within the Navy, so small they all could fit on one aircraft carrier,” said Logistics Specialist Seaman Emmanuel Brown. “The tour made me appreciate my orders to NMCB 4 because I am able to experience a different side of the Navy that many fleet rates are not familiar with.”

NMCB 4 is the forward deployed pacific NMCB ready to support Major Combat Operations and Humanitarian Assistance/ Disaster Relief operations and to provide general engineering and civil support to Navy, Marine Corps and joint operational forces. Homeported out of Port Hueneme, Calif., NMCB 4 has detachment sites deployed throughout the United States and Pacific area of operations, including Cambodia, Diego Garcia, Guam, Japan, Philippines, Republic of Korea and Timor Leste.
