FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The “whup whup” of a medical evacuation helicopter and OH-58D Kiowa Warrior elevated the cheers of students yelling “wow,” and mesmerized looks within each of their faces beamed as the pair of helicopters descended onto an open field near the Gordon Elementary School, April 13.

The students of Gordon are among schools across Fort Bragg and the Army honoring children of military parents during the month of April. Each April, the Department of Defense honors and celebrates the Month of the Military Child.

Soldiers of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade helped recognize the importance of, and sacrifices made by, military children.

“We are here today to celebrate our military children, “said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Daniel Miller, pilot with Charlie Co. 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion. “This gives the children the opportunity to see firsthand what we do and perhaps inspire them.”

To help service members children understand what their parents do at work, units across Fort Bragg have leant lend their support.

“We have had static displays and even had the 82nd Airborne band preform for the students,” said Joel Grim, principle of the school. “We appreciate the support the CAB has provided and the overwhelming support across Fort Bragg that have contributed in recognizing the significance of this month.”

“Its important to recognize and pay tribute to our military children for their unconditional support,” said Grim.

Another soldier with the CAB assigned with Bravo Troop, 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment who piloted the Kiowa Warrior explains the importance of this event.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to come here and show our support,” said 1st Lt. Levi Van Pelt. “Seeing their faces glitter is rewarding, this is the least we can do to show our appreciation for what our children sacrifice.”

The students were given the chance to don the aviator’s equipment and experience firsthand sitting inside the aircrafts and cockpit.

Both Van Pelt and Miller have children who attend Gordon.
