Leadership is defined as the power or ability to guide other individuals, teams, or organizations.

The Marine Corps, known for developing leaders, spoke with students from several colleges and universities as part of the Marine Corps Leadership Seminar at North Carolina Central University, April 8, 2016.

“The Marine Corps Leadership Seminar began five years ago as a way for the Marines to reach out to diverse colleges and universities throughout the country to showcase Marine leadership skills and improve diversity in the Corps,” said Dr. Kenneth D. Dunn, a Louisville native and the director of the Marine Corps Leadership Seminar. “During the event, we discuss leadership principles and traits, education and the core values: honor, courage and commitment.”

The seminar is comprised of discussion-based classes, a series of leadership exercises where each student serves as a group leader to apply the skills and traits discussed amongst their peers, a panel where students asked Marines questions about their leadership styles and experiences, and a guest speaker.

“I enjoyed the leadership exercises because they put you in a position to think quickly and lead a group of people in order to successfully complete the mission,” said Sam Stewart, a senior at NCCU. “This was probably what I will take away most from the event. I enjoyed every portion of the seminar and look forward to using what I learned here in the Marine Corps if I decide to join, or in another career path.”

The seminar provides the Marine Corps with the opportunity to communicate a message of leadership and integrity and the opportunities the Marine Corps provides to a diverse population of students.

“Being able to come to the leadership seminar allows me to engage with students that otherwise would have never considered the Marine Corps as an option,” said Capt. Marie Banks, Officer Selection Officer, Recruiting Station Raleigh, N.C. “I hope to answer their questions and dispel some of the myths surrounding the Corps.”

After meeting with Banks, Stewart began considering a career in the Marine Corps.

“As I get closer to graduating college I’m looking at all of my options and I’m trying to find what would be the most beneficial for me,” said Stewart. “I have been exposed to the military before, but seeing the Marine Corps here has impacted me. After hearing what they have to say and seeing what makes up a Marine, I can see the Marine Corps aligning with what I am looking for in a career and in my life.”

By holding and attending events such as the leadership seminar, the Marine Corps shows key influencers, educators and highly qualified prospects that the Corps is a viable career option.

“We hope to impart on the students something they can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” said Dunn. “Although not every student that attended this seminar came to get information on joining, by showing them what it means to be a Marine, we can create spokesmen for the Corps who could influence members of their community to become leaders in the world’s finest fighting force.”
