OTIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, MA - Airmen of the 102nd Intelligence Wing participated in the second annual Sexual Assault Prevention and Response 5K run on Saturday.
“In honor of sexual assault awareness month, which is the month of April, the 102nd IW has put together its second annual SAPR 5K,” said Lt. Col. Lisa Ahaesy, 102nd IW sexual assault response coordinator. “Despite the inclement weather, we had over 100 runners participate today. This certainly shows the level of commitment for our zero tolerance for sexual assault in the military, particularly at the 102nd.”
Airman 1st Class Marc George, 212th Engineering Installation Squadron, was the first to finish the race.
“I think [the SAPR 5K] is very important because people become complacent and they forget that the statistics are staggering,” he stated. “It’s important to bring awareness because it’s an important issue that needs to be addressed.”
Alongside the course, signs were posted to raise awareness to the statistics of sexual assault within the military community. The goal is teach military members to be on the lookout and to address behavior before it is too late.
Tech. Sgt. Michael Cleary, 102nd Force Support Flight, said, “It’s definitely raising awareness to everybody the signs they placed on the road.”
If military members become a victim or need to talk about an issue, they can reach out to wing victim advocates. The wing victim advocates are Maj. Michael McGourty, Senior Master Sgt. John Noland, Master Sgt. Tracy Sylvia and Tech. Sgt. Alexis Colonna.
