TAPA, Estonia - In a snow-laden motor pool, Sgt. Orlando Rivera and his two movement control Soldiers, Pfc. William Clancy and Pfc. Kaitlin Treadway, place Radio Frequency Identification tags on a Task Force Stilwell fuel truck Mar. 9.

Rivera was training his Soldiers on the new Portable Deployment Kit Lite, a system that until recently had been untested by conventional units.

Soldiers of the 627th Trans. Det. deployed to Atlantic Resolve-North are the first Soldiers in U.S. Army Europe to employ the PDK - Lite system.

With the PDK, the RFID tags activate. Subsequently, the RFID tags “ping” their location much like a radio beacon transmitting its position on a map.

As the RFID tag passes sensors, called interrogators, or Joint Capabilities Release – Logistics Enhancements kits, the Tactical Operations Center gets the precise location and time, via the Radio Frequency In-Transit Visibility national server.

Rivera trained his Soldiers by attaching RFID tags and activating them on Task Force Stilwell fuel trucks as they conducted their refuel movements between Tapa and Camp Adazi, Latvia.

“Seeing how this vehicle was tracked helped the Soldiers to understand why we attach these tags to pieces of cargo and tricons which often time change modes of transportation,” said Pfc. William Clancy.

Rivera saw the movements of the fuel truck and found out how long it took the fuel truck to arrive at Adazi, Latvia and Tapa, Estonia.

“Sgt. Rivera is training his Soldiers on systems proving to be effective in tracking the movement of goods and commodities,” said 1st Lt. Cameron Macdonald of the 66th Trans. Co.

As 3rd Squadron, 2nd Calvary Regiment nears the end of their exercise in Atlantic Resolve-North, their equipment will need to be prepared for movement back to Vilseck, Germany.

Their equipment includes rolling stock and containers, some of which will be line-hauled by the unit, rail loaded, and commercial line hauled.

The whereabouts of the equipment and the times it was in certain locations will be known through the use of the PDK, thus enabling Task Force Stilwell Soldiers to provide in-transit visibility of their supported unit’s equipment.
