FORT CARSON, Colo. – The 4th Infantry Division hosted U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Command Sgt. Maj. David S. Davenport Sr. to learn about the future of the NCO Corps March 30.
Accompanied by 4th Inf. Div. and Fort Carson Command Sgt. Maj. Michael A. Crosby, Davenport shared his vision for NCOs and leaders of today’s Army showcasing future and ongoing initiatives as part of NCO 2020, the Army’s concept for developing the next generation of competent and committed Army professionals.
“A year ago I came into the job and started reading a lot of documents and surveys,” Davenport said. “What I found was that nothing was really tied to the concept of NCO 2020.
“I found that Soldier 2020 had a lot to it, but NCO 2020 needed to have more,” he said.
NCO 2020 revises professional military education, employs the Select, Train, Educate and Promote process, and aims to refine career maps, NCO professional development, and credentialing opportunities necessary for the Army to develop adaptive, agile and creative leaders, capable of winning in a complex world.
The purpose of the many initiatives that comprise NCO 2020 is to prepare the next generation of competent and committed NCOs to be agile and adaptive leaders and trained professionals capable of fighting and winning in a complex and uncertain world.
Davenport said his primary focus is on the education of the NCO Corps. From this focus, the Army developed Select, Train, Educate, and Promote, commonly referred to as STEP. STEP ensures Soldiers get the appropriate training, education, and experience before being promoted.
“There is a need to get Soldiers into school,” Davenport said. “It’s not automatic promotions.
“Once you become promotable, you have 18 months to get into the appropriate level school,” Davenport said. “The Noncommissioned Officer Corps has a responsibility to ensure the Soldier understands their core competencies. The STEP is more than automatic promotions. It’s a forcing function to get all of the things done we want with NCO 2020.”
Davenport concluded the NCO Town Hall encouraging Soldiers to become active participants in his “Straight from the CSM” blog site.
An interactive, web-based forum for Soldiers to ask questions and offer feedback about the future of the force, http://www.tradocnews.org, is the official blog site of the TRADOC command sergeant major.
As part of his visit, Davenport also visited the 168th Regiment Regional Training Institute (RTI), a multi-component RTI of Excellence responsible for training future leaders.
“It is a real honor and privilege to have TRADOC's command sergeant major visit the 4th Inf. Div. and the 168th Reg. RTI to discuss the future of professional military education, NCO professional development and credentialing opportunities for our Army professionals," said Crosby. "Leader development combined with progressive, challenging and realistic training are the life-blood of this organization and its NCOs, and NCO 2020 will be instrumental in ensuring our Soldiers are fit, disciplined and well-trained."
Following his visit to Fort Carson, Davenport will visit other installations to spread his vision for NCO 2020.
