FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Culinary specialists from the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade dining facility here, prepared a feast Tuesday, March 29, 2016 for a chance to represent Fort Bragg during the 49th Annual Philip A. Connelly Competition at the Department of the Army level.

“We’re trying to figure out who will best represent Fort Bragg,” Bryan Nixon, assistant installation food service supervisor, said. “It’s going to be a tough competition, but they’re doing really well and they’re very professional.”

The team of Spartans united during a showing of their culinary skills in order to demonstrate their professionalism and dedication to producing excellent meals and an exceptional dining experience for Soldiers.

“You have to make sure you have quality products and offer quality meals to Soldiers,” Sgt. 1st Class Monica York, Spartan dining facility manager, said. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication.”

Some of the areas evaluated during the competition focused on food preparation, sanitation, product waste, quality of meal, the presentation, and customer satisfaction.
For at least one Soldier, some of the focus was on teamwork.

“There’s a lot of different things that we have to do compared to a regular meal and we have to work together to get the mission accomplished,” Spc. Edlicia Hall, a brigade culinary specialist, said.

Competing in competitions builds unit cohesion, allowing Soldiers to grow and reach the same goals together, Sgt. 1st Class Arturo Arreola, brigade senior culinary management noncommissioned officer, said.

But winning shines another light on the brigade and its Soldiers.

“Winning highlights the type of Soldiers the brigade has and their level of dedication to the unit,” York said. “It also gives a boost to the morale and helps the unit to standout Army-wide.”

But before the Spartan dining facility can compete at the DA level, it has to outperform 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, following the brigade’s showing Tuesday.

The next phase of the competition allows the winning dining facility to compete against multiple installations, while being inspected by the 406th Army Field Support Brigade, at the Army Materiel Command level.

At the end of the day, the Spartan team is comprised of professionals striving to be better at what they do every day and the Philip A. Connelly Competition provided an opportunity to allow the Soldiers to further hone their skills.
