WATERS SURROUNDING THE KOREAN PENINSULA — Sailors aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) attended a ceremony in the chiefs mess highlighting Women’s History Month, March 26.

The ceremony, coordinated by John C. Stennis’ multi-cultural heritage committee, focused on stories of inspirational women.

Yeoman Seaman Regan Edwards, one of the guest speakers, talked about why supporting women’s history month is important and the reasons she joined the Navy.

“Women in the Navy have accomplished so much within the past 20 years,” said Edwards, from Ocean City, Md. “They have paved the way for future female Sailors and without them I probably wouldn’t be able to accomplish my goals of going to college and becoming an officer.”
Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Destiny Berthoud recited an original poem at the event and gave her thoughts on why this event is so meaningful.

“I think that sometimes we forget how far we have come,” said Berthoud, from Atlanta. “This event serves as a reminder that when things feel hard and you don’t feel equal you really are, especially now with women graduating from Army Ranger school and doing other great things.”

Master Chief Personnel Specialist Danielle Gunsett shared her support for women’s history.

“I think that recognizing women’s history month is just as important as recognizing any of the other differences we share that make us all common as Sailors,” said Gunsett, from Huntington, Indiana. “I think the message addressed is the fact that these great women were Sailors above and beyond everything else.”

This year, the committee decided to host a cake and ice cream social while empowering songs echoed through the speakers in the blue and purple decorated chiefs mess. Men of every rank volunteered to help serve and clean up while the women mingled among themselves creating a mentorship atmosphere.

Providing a ready force supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific, John C. Stennis is operating as part of the Great Green Fleet on a regularly scheduled 7th Fleet deployment.
