The sailboat captain called his son at 10 a.m. and his son immediately called Sector Houston-Galveton watchstanders stating that his dad was five miles offshore and his boat was on fire.
Watchstanders launched a Station Freeport 45-foot response boat crew.
Once on scene, the boat crew took the captain and his dog aboard and two crewmen proceeded to assess fire damage aboard the sailboat.
"Once on scene we could smell the burning vessel. We saw the gentleman and his dog on deck with life jackets on," said Chief Petty Officer Andrew Babione, executive petty officer of Station Freeport.
"The master did everything right. He called for help immediately. He filed a float plan with his wife and had all the safety gear required," said Babione.
The boat crew took the sailboat in side tow by rigging to the mast of the sailboat.
They arrived at Freeport Marina met by EMS and local fire department.
Salvage plans have been coordinated by the owner.
No injuries and no pollution.
