WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio- 38 veterans from around Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, were honored March 16 during a Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony held at Air Force Materiel Command.

"This was a wonderful way to recognize all the veterans from the Vietnam era even if they didn't serve in the war itself," said Linda Cumberworth, a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam era who was recognized during the ceremony. "When each person enlisted, signed their name and raised their hand, they knew there was a chance they could go and it was always on their mind."

During the ceremony, veterans representing all branches of the military had their name called and received a commemorative pin and copy of the Proclamation by the President of the United States commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. Family members of deceased veterans accepted with the items on their loved one's behalf.

Col. Shaun Hick, Defense Enterprise Application and Management System program manager, presided over the ceremony hosted by Air Force Life Cycle Management Center who's Business and Enterprise Systems directorate is a commemorative partner with the Vietnam War 50th congressionally chartered Organization.

"I have a number of Vietnam veterans that work in my organization and it was an honor to be able conduct the recognition of their service on behalf of the United States Government," said Hick.

Many of the veterans who served during the Vietnam War were often greeted with distain and called names because of their service in the very unpopular war.

Both Hicks and Cumberworth agreed that today's ceremony was a great way to honor these service members and to thank the brave men and women who served during the Vietnam war era for their service and sacrifices.
