BREMERTON, Wash. - Naval Hospital Bremerton’s Professional Development Committee celebrated Certified Nurses Day by honoring all board certified nurses for their professional dedication and enhanced patient-centered care capability March, 22, 2016.

“All health care is getting more complex and so is nursing. Mastering that complexity is what getting becoming certified does for a Navy Nurse Corps officer and registered nurse. We thank everyone who is certified. We even have an honorary coffee cup for those who have the most certifications because they probably need a lot of coffee to keep up with all they do,” said Capt. Amy McBride, NHB director for Nursing Services head.

According to McBride, board certification for nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. While a registered nurse (RN) license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse. Naval Hospital Bremerton supports that commitment and encourages national board certification for all its nurses.

There are currently 64 certified nurses – or 56 percent - out of approximately 114 military and civilian nurses assigned to Naval Hospital Bremerton including Branch Health Clinic (BHC) Bangor, BHC Everett and BHC Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. NHB more than doubles the 2012 national average of 20 percent as board certification for nurses in the U.S. Board certification for nurses focuses on such disciplines as medical-surgical, pediatric, pain management, cardiac vascular, oncology, hospice, case management, emergency nursing, and critical care specialties.

“There are a variety of specialties that one can be certified. All certifications require the individual to demonstrate high standards of professional practice excellence. A certification in a given field is not always required, but as a healthcare organization that strives to ensure delivery of high quality patient care, Naval Hospital Bremerton's nursing leadership encourages all eligible nurses to pursue certification,” said Lt. Stephany Daniell, NHB Urgent Care Clinic division officer and holder of two board certifications as a certified pediatric emergency nurse and a certified emergency nurse.

Cmdr. Dave Thomas and Lt. Cmdr. Jessica Robinson are tied for the most with four separate nursing certifications at NHB. Thomas is a registered nurse-board certified ambulatory care, professional legal nurse consultant, certified emergency nurse, and certified medical surgical registered nurse. Robinson claims certification in maternal newborn nursing, certified electronic fetal monitoring, certified lactation educator and international board certified lactation consultant.

Daniell attests that when patients visit NHB for an appointment, they are encouraged and reminded that they can ask if there are certified nurses on the staff.

“If a patient were to ask about certification I would explain that being certified validates that the nurse caring for them has demonstrated experience and skill in their field. They have committed themselves to professional excellence which ultimately improves patient outcomes and experiences. Personally, being a certified nurse provides me with an extra layer of confidence when delivering patient care. It also helps communicate to my patients that I have dedicated myself to the specialty of emergency room nursing and have a certain level of experience and competency,” explained Daniell.

The specific nursing field certifications held by staff members at NHB are in Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult Registered Nurse Practitioner, Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse, Case Management, Critical Care Nurse, Electronic Fetal Monitoring, Emergency Room Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner, Gastroenterology Nurse, Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inpatient Obstetrics, Lactation Consultant, Lactation Educator, Legal Nurse Consultant, Maternal Newborn Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nurse, Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse, Nurse Midwife, Occupational Health Nurse Specialist, Operating Room Nurse, Pediatric Emergency Nurse, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Post Anesthesia Care Nursing, Professional in Healthcare Quality, Professional in Utilization Review, Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse.

The chosen date of Certified Nurses Day is March 19 was specifically chosen to honor the enduring legacy of Margretta “Gretta” Madden Styles, Doctor of Education, Registered Nurse and Fellowship of American Academy Nursing (1903-2005). March 19 is Styles’ birthday, and she became known as the "Mother of Nurse Credentialing" and a visionary scholar who made an international impact on the nursing profession.
