    Story by Sgt. David Beckstrom

    U.S. Army Central

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - Physical fitness workouts come in a variety of ranges, from low-intensity yoga to high-intensity P90x. High Intensity Interval Training is just one of these styles that has gained momentum with the introduction of programs like CrossFit and Insanity.

Staff Sgt. Will Scott, the noncommissioned officer-in-charge of logistics for Area Support Group – Kuwait, used HIIT exercises to drop more than 80 pounds and bring his blood pressure back to a healthy range.

“I was overweight with triple-digit (systolic and diastolic) blood pressure,” said Scott. “I just wasn’t taking care of myself. I decided to make a change in my life and actively become healthier. I started working out and realized that I had a passion for it. Now, I try to give back to others by teaching exercise classes.”

Scott taught the March fitness challenge for Soldiers with 10th Combat Support Hospital gathered at the Camp Arifjan, Kuwait Morale, Welfare, and Recreation field.

The 10th CSH uses these monthly events to help their Soldiers get and stay fit while increasing the esprit de corps and morale of the unit, said Sgt. Josh Proffitt, the physical therapy noncommissioned officer-in-charge for the 10th CSH.

Scott is a certified instructor in several exercise styles. He took these certificate to the MWR and asked if he could teach a HIIT exercise class a few times a week. He now teaches classes at the Camp Arifjan Zone 1 Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and at the Zone 6 Gym on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

“I regularly participate in the classes that he offers and I asked Sgt. Scott to show our Soldiers a new way of exercising that is high energy and fun,” said Col. Leticia Sandrock, the deputy commander of nursing at the 10th CSH. “He is very motivating and this makes them aware of another style of exercising to help them stay healthy.”

The Army uses the performance triad to help Soldiers become as mentally, physically and spiritually prepared for combat as possible, said Sandrock. The 10th CSH uses their monthly fitness challenge as a way to incorporate this triad into its Soldiers’ lives in a fun, competitive manner.

“We are trying to build warrior athletes in the military,” said Proffitt. “A total-body workout, from a physical therapists’ standpoint, is one of the best exercise plans that people can follow. If people choose and stick with a workout style, as long as it doesn’t injure them, then they will become healthier and stronger.”

Scott has told his story to several people to show them that if he can do it at 55 years old, then anyone can.
“I just want to help other people achieve their goal of a healthy lifestyle,” said Scott. “Whether they follow my exercise plan or just get inspired by my story, I have helped them work toward their objective.”
