PORT ORCHARD, Wash. – Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Puget Sound Sailors celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with resident veterans at Washington Veterans Home Retsil, March 17.
The Sailors spent the afternoon conversing, handing out snacks and assisting the residents during the festivities.
"It’s very important that we recognize our veterans and help in any way we can,” said Cmdr. Keith W. Jeffries, NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound executive officer, from Phoenix, Arizona.
Sailors traded stories with resident veterans throughout the visit.
“We try really hard to come and visit the residents at least once a month,” said Lt. Timothy Trask, stationed with NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound, and from Jacksonville, Florida. “What we do here might not seem like much, but it matters to everyone involved in some way or another. No matter what, it is time well spent.”
The Washington Veterans Home Retsil is on a 31-acre campus with a state-of-the-art facility serving more than 240 veterans needing both long-term nursing and assisted-living care.
“They love it, I mean we all love that you all come down to spend time with the veterans,” said Elaine Martin, activity personnel of Washington Veterans Home Retsil, from Prosser, Washington. “It gives young Sailors a chance to see how the future could be and [veterans] get a chance to re-live the past through you.”
Located on the shores of Puget Sound, NAVSUP Puget Sound was established Oct. 2, 1967, with the consolidation of Naval Supply Depot Seattle and is one of eight FLC’s providing for the Navy’s logistics needs worldwide.
