1st Brigade Soldiers to deploy throughout Europe

    FORT STEWART, GA, UNITED STATES

    Story by Maj. Randy Ready

1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division

FORT STEWART, Ga. - Approximately 3,500 soldiers from 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division will deploy for a 6-month rotation this spring as U.S. Army Europe’s Regionally Allocated Force.

The brigade will be training throughout 11 countries in Europe, conducting multinational exercises focused on improving interoperability.

“We look to build on the relationships developed with our NATO allies and partners during the brigade’s previous two rotations to Europe,” said Col. Phil Brooks, the 1st Brigade commander. “These relationships improve our ability to operate alongside our allies as part of a combined force while also reassuring our allies and partners of America’s continued commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the region.”

As part of this rotation, 1st Brigade will be taking part in Exercise Anakonda 16 in Poland.

Anakonda 16 is a Polish-led, joint, multinational exercise taking place throughout Poland from June 7-17. It involves more than 25,000 participants from 24 nations. Anakonda 16 is a capstone event for U.S. Army Europe and partnered nations, which validates the requirements set at the NATO Wales Summit in September 2014 and sets conditions for success for the NATO biannual summit in July 2016 in Warsaw, Poland.

Approximately 1,500 1st Brigade soldiers will also support Operation Atlantic Resolve, a demonstration of continued U.S. commitment to the collective security of our NATO allies and partners.

As a part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, soldiers will conduct exercises in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. These exercises give soldiers the opportunity to work and train alongside our NATO allies, build relationships that foster trust and mutual understanding, strengthen interoperability and demonstrate the United States’ commitment to the NATO alliance.

Additional scheduled exercises include Noble Partner in Georgia, Combined Resolve in Germany and international tank competitions in Denmark and Germany.

For this deployment, 1st Brigade soldiers will draw the European Activity Set of equipment from storage locations in Germany, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria.

The EAS is a brigade-sized group of vehicles and equipment designed to outfit U.S. Army units when they rotate into theater for training. The EAS fleet includes vehicle systems and equipment that would outfit an Armored Brigade Combat Team, such as tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery pieces, engineer equipment, and a standard array of tracked and wheeled support systems.

As the Regionally Allocated Force for Europe, 1st Brigade is responsible for serving as the European Rotational Force and the NATO Response Force. The brigade is responsible for the ERF/NRF mission through 2016.

“The training opportunities our soldiers and young leaders will receive during this rotation will be challenging, realistic, and include combined arms and joint exercises that will ensure the brigade is ready to conduct decisive action operations against a myriad of threats,” said Brooks. “The end result will be an Armored Brigade Combat Team that is ready, capable and willing to respond to any contingency that threatens the United States or our allies.”
