SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. - A group of five Airmen run into the Shaw Fitness and Health Center and head straight for the front desk. The man working at the desk reaches into an envelope and hands one of the team members a slip of paper, which she reads aloud:

“This well-known female helped famous explorers Lewis and Clark on their expedition of the Louisiana Purchase. Who was she? Go to the place where little ones cry.”

After a brief moment of deliberation, one of the team members shouts, “the Child Development Center!” and just as quickly as the group of Airmen came, they are off to the next stop on their journey.

The Women’s History Month committee hosted a scavenger hunt to kick off Women’s History Month at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina March 4.

“We wanted to go away from doing the typical ‘fun run’ or walk,” said Staff Sgt. Catrina Rouse, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of plans and operations and Women’s History Month committee member. “We wanted to try something different to get people out and get them excited about women’s history.

“We had six teams running around base; they got to answer questions about different women in history while figuring out which facility to go to for the next clue, so it was challenging and they got to learn a lot at the same time.”

The Women’s History Month theme for 2016 is “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government.” The theme, chosen by the National Women’s History Project, aims to highlight women who have shaped U.S. history through public service and government leadership.

“To me, being a woman in the armed forces, it sounds like they are calling us out because it says ‘women in government,’” said Tech. Sgt. Shawn’Tina Reid, 20th Force Support Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of installation personnel readiness and scavenger hunt participant. “It means a lot to know that no matter how small or big we have a piece in women’s history.”

In addition to the scavenger hunt, the Women’s History Month committee plans to host a women’s health fair, a Zumba-thon, and an information booth at the Exchange among other events throughout the month of March.

“You have to know where you came from to know where you’re going,” Rouse said. “You don’t want to make the same mistakes that they did before us. I used to not like history because it can be kind of dry sometimes, but it explains where you came from and why things are the way they are.”

Women’s History Month is an excellent opportunity to reflect on the contributions women have made throughout U.S. history, and this year’s theme presents a special opportunity for those working for the armed forces, such as active duty service members and government employees, to reflect on the women who have shaped their branch of service and the government as a whole.

“A lot of women have paved the way for other women to become who they are,” said Reid. “We have women generals now; we have women in the White House working in different areas. Things like that couldn’t have happened 50 years ago because back in the day women were supposed to be in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant.

“It’s not like that now, and it’s because of the women before us.”
