NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ginia Bevis, administrative support assistant at the Tennessee River Area Office at Wilson Lock in Florence, Alabama, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District employee of the month for January 2016.
Bevis is recognized for her significant contributions and demonstrated professionalism, administrative expertise and her untiring efforts to rally required training for area managers and 44 employees from Guntersville, Pickwick, Wilson and Wheel locks that resulted in meeting a required deadline, which saved both time and money.
Tom Hale, Tennessee Navigation Area Office operations manager, said Bevis’ hard work, dedication, and communication with each lockmaster on the Tennessee River ensured all project files were up-to-date in a timely manner. He said Bevis went above and beyond to expend a lot of effort helping her co-workers complete critical training, and in particular proved especially valuable ensuring training and the smooth transition to the new timekeeping process.
“Ginia is most deserving for her award because of the communication, extra effort she puts forth to her work and be the best at her job,” said Hale. “Her willingness to make smart decisions, answer questions, and provide assistance to anyone at any time shows her dedication to her profession and the personnel in the district.”
Bevis attributes the surprise recognition to the support she receives from the whole team.
“I really enjoy my job, the opportunities it has to offer and the training I have received over the years,” said Bevis. “I count it a privilege to receive this award and I share this award with my co-workers because it’s very much a team effort.”
Shelby Putman, administrative assistant at Wheeler Lock, said Bevis trained her when she arrived and her work ethic, expertise and knowledge makes the Tennessee River area team better.
“She is a great person and can work many projects at a time and can handle multiple issues at one time,” said Putman. “One of her best qualities is that she is a communicator, well-organized and very professional.”
Bevis began working for the Nashville District as a student at the main Wilson Lock in 1990 and admits that she has enjoyed learning various administrative jobs, working with many great people and owes much of her success to Betty Enlow, a former Nashville District employee who loved people, and passed on a few of her characteristics to Bevis.
“I’ve worked at this job for 26 years and have had the opportunity to be surrounded by great people that have passion for their jobs and care about what they do,” said Bevis. “But Betty was a wonderful lady that taught me so much about the Corps, how to work well with other employees and I appreciate that.”
Lt. Col. Stephen F. Murphy, Nashville District commander said that Bevis’ commitment and initiative to the Nashville District’s mission makes her an outstanding employee.
Murphy said Bevis’ knowledge empowered her and she has used her extensive professional and personal knowledge to improve the Tennessee Area River Office and the lives of the employees with whom she interacts.
“This kind of impact is immeasurable and invaluable and goes a long way towards making the District such a great place to work,” said Murphy.
Donna Parker, budget technician in the Mid-Tennessee River Area Office, said Bevis is well deserving of the award because she is a great person to work with, who is friendly, smart, professional and dedicated to helping and exceeding the needs of those she serves.
“I have worked with Ginia for many years and she is not only a role model employee but a great team player both personal and professionally,” said Parker.
Hale said Bevis is just one of many employees that make the Nashville District great – “hard working, competent, and always caring about other employees.”
Bevis said she loves her job and appreciates the kind words and support she experiences every day at work.
“It’s really nice that your work is recognized and co-workers appreciate you,” Bevis said. “I was really pleased to hear about the award.”
Bevis is a native of Killen, Alabama, and has a bachelor’s degree from Athens State University and an Associate degree from Northwest Shoals Community College in Alabama.
Bevis and her husband Billy have been married for 20 years. They have a daughter, Emily, 14 and a son, Matt, 10. She loves spending time with her family and working with her church family. She is a very active sports-and-band mom with her children. She also loves watching the University of Alabama play football and the Atlanta Braves play baseball. Her hobbies include cooking, baking and traveling.
Murphy said Bevis’ professionalism, dedication to mission execution, and superior performance is a credit to the Nashville District, the region, and the Corps of Engineers.
