LONDONDERRY, N.H. – The 368th Engineer Battalion hosted a change of responsibility ceremony on Feb. 20 at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Londonderry, New Hampshire.

This ceremony was a formality and honor finally bestowed on Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen M. Bodwell, who already has been serving as the unit’s senior enlisted noncommissioned officer since April of last year.

A command sergeant major provides valuable experience and input to sustainment and planning processes for operations, logistics and other higher-level functions that affect every soldier in the unit. The ceremony officially marks Bodwell’s position as the unit’s enlisted lead on such matters.

"I volunteered to come over as the interim command sergeant major,” said Bodwell. "It's a huge responsibility. Out of the three battalions in our brigade, we have the largest battalion. We're spread out over five states and three countries.”

"I take it very seriously,” he added. “It's important I do a good job and take care of soldiers."

Bodwell has a vast background spanning 28 years of service. His experience has covered life as an active duty infantryman, a surveyor in the 368th Engineer Bn. in the Army Reserve, a drill sergeant, deployments for Operation Enduring Freedom in both Iraq and Afghanistan and now as a command sergeant major for the 368th Eng. Bn.

Senior leadership have already seen that Bodwell has what it takes.

“He's definitely earned the wreath and stars on his chest,” said Army Lt. Col. Joseph F. Cox, the battalion commander of the 368th Engineer Bn. “In the last 10 months he has shown that he is capable of handling the job.”

"This is someone that already had a history with this unit, knows the soldiers in this unit, and knows what the mission is," added Command Sgt. Maj. William T. Padgelek, the senior enlisted noncommissioned officer of the 302nd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. "Command Sgt. Maj. Bodwell is someone I know and I can trust and I know he has [the Soldiers'] best interests in mind. He has already proven that to us.”
