NAPLES, Italy - Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Andrew Kim broadened his knowledge when Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Naples opened enrollment to one of the Navy's warfare qualification programs, the enlisted information dominance warfare specialist (EIDWS), to tenant commands.

The EIDWS designation was implemented in 2010 to enhance the Navy's understanding of information dominance to increase warfighting and mission effectiveness. It covers specific knowledge pertaining to the Information Dominance Corps (IDC) ratings of information systems technician, cryptologic technician, intelligence specialist and aerographer's mate, but the program is open to Sailors of all ratings.

Within three months, Kim, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, completed the IDC personal qualification standard (PQS). However, it was a challenge, Kim required an escort to access the Command, Control, Computers, Communications and Intelligence (C4I) building. "Building relationships with personnel within the IDC ratings was the first step for me," said Kim. "Every day during my lunch break or after work, I walked to the C4I building for training and PQS signatures."

To qualify for EIDWS, Sailors must demonstrate general knowledge of the command's overall mission to include; intelligence, information warfare, meteorological, oceanographic, Joint missions and other mission-essential tasking, through written examination, hands-on demonstration of knowledge requirements, and a comprehensive oral examination by a Qualification Review Board (QRB).

"I studied 4-5 hours every day, just as if I was studying for the advancement exam," said Kim.

Kim's EIDWS QRB consisted of five members and lasted for 20 minutes. Kim received a perfect score and was the first Sailor to pass NCTS Naples' EIDWS QRB from a tenant command. On Dec. 28, 2015, Cmdr. Kerry Baker, site director of Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Sigonella Site Naples, presented Kim with the EIDWS designation certificate and the EIDWS insignia was pinned onto his uniform by Chief Logistics Specialist Brooks Parks.
