CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – Marine Corps officials recognized a Canby, Oregon, native as the 3rd Marine Logistics Group Marine of the Year for 2015.
Cpl. John M. Cranston, an administrative specialist with 3rd Transport Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force received the award at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 5, 2016.
Cranston was selected from approximately 5,000 Marines in 3rd MLG.
“I set my goals high,” said Cranston. “My goals are to compete and be better than the Marines around me; in order to do that, you have to be competitive in all areas. Whether its physical fitness, education or community service you have to be a well-rounded Marine to be competitive.”
As a noncommissioned officer, it is expected to set the example for the junior Marines.
“I try to set the best example of doing everything to my best capabilities, and I try my hardest even if I’m not the greatest at a skill,” said Cranston.
Helping your subordinates succeed is a sign of good leadership, according to Cpl. Eduardo Dozal, an administrative specialist in Cranston’s unit.
“Cranston helped me in the promotion process – he helped me learn what I needed to do to succeed in picking up corporal,” said Dozal from Phoenix, Arizona. “He always wants to help in some way. He just isn’t one to tell you how to do something, he personally takes his time to show you how to do a task and make sure you learn how to do it. Junior Marines should always show the consistency that he has in always trying his hardest.”
Cranston said his grandfather, a retired Marine lieutenant colonel, inspired him to join the Marine Corps.
“I joined the Marine Corps because I wanted to do something exceptional,” said Cranston. “I didn’t want to do something that the average person in my hometown does. My grandfather was also in the Marines and I like the feeling that I’m falling into his legacy by being in the Marine Corps,”
Cranston said he already has goals set for 2016. With his goals already set in mind, Cranston has a lot to look forward to this year.
“For 2016, my goals are to get promoted to sergeant and to continue what I’ve been doing,” said Cranston. “The Marine Corps has a ‘What did you do for me today?’ mentality not a ‘What have you done in the past?’ mentality. I want to go on a meritorious sergeant board and win.”
